Benefits and cons of a middle unit (mid mount) motor (bicycle)

Benefits of a middle unit (mid mount) instead of a hub motor
The weight of the engine's weight is placed low and centralized in the frame (instead of a heavy hub in the front or rear wheel). This gives a better balance and a better balanced feel.
Probably fewer broken spokes from hitting hard surfaces, potholes, etc. than with a heavy hub motor in the wheel.
Often a bit lighter than equally match hubengines. Depending on construction that is.
The engine can use the bicycle gears. That means that it is possible to keep the electric motor at a speed which better utilizes the battery, meaning more effectively. In other words: That can provide longer range if used properly.

By using different gears provides a wider range of performance from a smaller and lighter engine.
A lot easier to change a flat tire with a non-electric hub motor. The wheel is easier to carry, etc., everything becomes easier, no electric cable to mind, etc.
Climbing steep hills better than a hub motor.

Wheels without hub motor rolls normally better downhill. It feels more like a bicycle. And we like that, don’t we?

Cons of a mid-drive:
Often harder to get to fit the frame. It might not fit your regular bike frame etc. More complicated. Bosch system even need a special frame.
Often more expensive than a simple hub-motor.
Can be noisier than a hub, a direct drive with a good control system is quiet. More parts, gearwheel and such that makes more noise than a totally brushless engine with no gear.
Mid-units have more moving parts and therefore tend to be less reliable than most hub motor kit.
Might hit something hard with the engine below the frame. Hub engines seams more protected somehow. Or?

Electric bike and golfbag

This is my neighbor going with his electric bike to a golf court.

He is using his bicycle trailer to carry the golf clubs.

And he has got stereo plugs also. Everything you need except a roof :)

Monark electric bike in Sweden, mid mount, some pictures

Mats Bicycle, a nice sturdy bike with mid frame electric engine.
One of my college (Mats) have an Monark electric bike that he has used for a year now. He has nothing to complain about it, he just wants some more gears, for a wider range. The bike seems to be working fine. He drives it also in the winter, and no problem. Here are some pictures of it. Engine is mid mount.

Mats is very pleased with it overall.

The Removable battery: It is not in the pictures.

Mid frame electric engines, Bosch and Bafang

A litte about Bosch and Bafang solutions:

Fine Crescent electrically assistent (Bosch Motor), crankset, 10 gears
The advantage of this type of mid frame bicycle is that it has no hub motor and that it rolls better than a bicycle with an electric motor in the hub. Significantly better roll down the slopes and feeling more like a bike.

Price about ca 23000 swedish crones. Weight: 21.5 kg. Picture from Cresent.se
This bike was a testwinner in a review that a Swedish Newpaper did. You can watch the test here, only in swedish.

ENGINE

Purpose of this blog

The purpose of this blog is to learn more about electric bikes. Partly to learn myself more and hopefully be able to learn you something.

I have had a electric front wheel kit for a number of years (about 10 years), but barely used it, for a while I wanted to make my own electric construction for the drive, but I never got that project ready. Meanwhile the lead batteries fairly quickly died out.

I´m slowly planning to order a new battery and check if the electric motor and the electronics still work.

In this blog I will write about electric bikes that I find interesting. Everything from batteries to electric motors.

I will also practice my English, bear with me, I´m from Sweden.

Here are some pictures of my Miyata Trailrunner and electric hub engine.
