2-stroke moped: Piaggio Zip vs Typhoon

 Piaggio Typhoon vs Zip, differences

Piaggio Zip and Typhoon wheels are the same offset diameter and width, the tyre size is the only difference according to forum info.

The 2-stroke engines both have 17.5 mm carburetor. The Zip may not go as fast as the Typhoon because of other gearing in the transmission. Later the Zip came as a 4-stroke, I will not compare it here.

Some put singe side shocks on the zip and it looks really cool. For example SP forks and Sfera wheels.

The Zip SP model was water-cooled and had single sided front suspension.

Back in the days I bough a brand new Sfera 80cc (2-stroke), it was a lot of fun, pretty nippy and fast at the start. However they (low life people/animals?) tried to steal it and broke the sides and ignition so I got tired of it.. and..  I bough a brand new Peugeot Fox instead.

Photo and build by L. Foley. Sfera front wheels according to Foley.

Also the Zip wont like the typhoon forks.. the bars wont work, the ride hight may be affected and it may not handle well.  With a wheel as wide as the rear... much better off wiht Zip sp/vespa forks ... someone thinks.

But if you got your heart set on typhoon wheels grab some ice forks (Gilera I believe).

The Zip and Typhoon are already Piaggio engines so the difference will not be made on the engine or the quality of the engine parts. However there are two types Piaggio Hi-PER-2 and the Hi-PER-1 and there are some diffrences, see this page.

The engine used in almost all models including the Piaggio NRG, Gilera Runner, Piaggio TPH, Gilera Stalker, Piaggio Zip.

The zip is a short crankcase and the typhoon a long variator case. Both are 10" but the Typhoon has a much bigger tire. Gear ratio they say is a little diffrent on the two.

By the way: NRG, Gilera Runner, Typhoon and Gilera Stalker used the long engine housing, and Zip, Vespa ET2, and Sfera used the short case one.

The typhoon is according to some better because it has more equipment, hence a more expensive price.

The Zip Mk1 does not have a fuel gauge for example, only a reserve indicator and you will have to manage with it.

If you want a small size and takes short trip the Zip is very good.

It all depends on the use and the person. (and the bugdet at the same time).

A nice Surly steelbike and a long hauler cargo trailer!

"Attached a ladder to the cart and then the drawbar to the ladder. It turned out really cool and I could have taken another box if you put them on the other link. I put anti-slip tape on the ladder so the load sits more stable. The steps of the ladder are hollow and were perfect for to pull the cargo straps through so they stayed in place better. However, I had a bit of a problem with the cart being jerky." - E. Brinkman

"The ladder were also from Biltema. When I removed the sides of the cart, its brackets stuck up, between them the ladder just had room with small wooden spacers so that the ladder would sit firmly. Then I used hose clamps to secure it.

I then attached the pull arm with screws to the sides of the ladder. But to stabilize it, I took a steel tube that just fit inside the drawbar, which now makes it sit more firmly. You can see it in the picture. But it is quite possible that it is unnecessary."  - E. Brinkman

I believe the ladder is 3m

"I have now made a couple of beams which means that a wide load comes above the wheels and at the same time is supported laterally." - E. Brinkman

"120cm wide bed was surprisingly easy to drive!" - E. Brinkman

Locking with alarm, chain locks

 More locks against the misfits

So we all know there are too many failed people out there stealing other peoples stuff. Whether it be fail child rearing, failed parents or whatever who produces these people.

The only thing we can do is to get more locks, more alarm. Raise people to the skies, those who defend their property against the misfits.

This is Zovi ZOVII ZCL08-120 chain lock with alarm, it has 8mm links.

In this case the owner got to keep his electric kick scooter. Probably cause the alarm and that it took the thieves too long to cut it with a angle grinder. The scooter was locked with two locks.

"The chain lock I use also has a loud sound that is supposed to scare."  - S. Irlanmaz

Thanks S. Irlanmaz for the pictures and info!

"Got to keep the scooter a while longer...probably thanks to the chain lock. Why he/they gave up I don't know. It's outside my job and I can't bring it in." - S. Irlanmaz

Me myself I try to at least buy locks made with swedish class 3, for motorbikes. Heavy but hey, what you got to do...
